On October 7 and 8, 2009 Maxim Vengerov further affirmed his aptitude as a thriving conductor, when his critically acclaimed pair of sold-out performances at the Roy Thomson Hall met with standing ovations. The all-Russian program included Shostakovich Festive Overture, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, with Alexander Toradze as the piano soloist, and Symphony No. 6 ("Pathétique") in B minor, op. 74. "Maxim Vengerov has tremendous presence as a conductor", remarked Peter Oundjian, Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Toronto's Globe and Mail described Maestro Vengerov's conducting as "impressive", "satisfying" and "wise". In his review Mr. Eatock writes: "The Pathétique belonged entirely to Vengerov. Throughout, his direction was taut and purposeful, with impressive attention to the inner parts of the score. <...> The lively third movement drew a spontaneous ovation from the audience <...> But it was in the poignant final movement that Vengerov made the deepest impression, deftly steering the orchestra through Tchakovsky's complex musical syntax. At the movement's conclusion, he held his hands aloft in profound silence for a full 10 seconds before he permitted applause. Clearly, Vengerov knows what he wants and how to get it."
Maestro Vengerov is looking forward to his upcoming engagements, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra on October 20 and 21, 2009; Sinfonietta Cracovia on October 28, 2009; Tampere Philharmonic on November 20, 2009; and Rostropovich Festival on December 14, 2009 with Baku Philharmonic, where Maestro is the Music Director.
Following in the footsteps of his mentor, the late Mstislav Rostropovich, Vengerov is bringing his remarkable sensitivity and keen musicianship to the podium and deepening his relationships with some of the world's finest orchestras, including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, which he has conducted at the invitation of Valery Gergiev.
